Kenya designates Muslim Brotherwood as a terrorist organization

Kenya has recently designated the Muslim Brotherhood and other organizations as terrorist entities. This decision is part of a broader security strategy and is influenced by both internal and external factors. The primary reason for the ban is to strengthen Kenya's national security and its counter-insurgency campaigns. Kenya has been dealing with threats from Islamist groups like Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda affiliate.

Kenyan authorities believe that designating these groups as terrorist organizations will help them crack down on Islamist networks, curb radicalization, and prevent the spread of extremist ideologies within the country. The decision also reflects a significant shift in Kenya's foreign policy and its alliances in the Middle East.

Kenya has been strengthening its ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country that is one of the fiercest opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood. The UAE and other Gulf monarchies (like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain) have long considered the Brotherhood a threat to their authoritarian rule and have designated it as a terrorist group. By following suit, Kenya is signaling a closer security and economic partnership with Abu Dhabi.

The ban is not without controversy within Kenya. Some local political figures, particularly from the ruling party, have criticized the move, arguing that it could alienate parts of Kenya's Muslim community and potentially fuel further radicalization among certain individuals. While the Muslim Brotherhood is not known to have a widespread presence or have carried out major attacks in Kenya, the ban reflects the government's pre-emptive approach to security and its political alignment with external partners.

The following countries have banned the Muslim Brotherhood, citing various reasons related to national security or political stability:

Bahrain 🇧🇭
Egypt 🇪🇬
Russia 🇷🇺
Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
Syria 🇸🇾
United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪
Austria 🇦🇹
Kenya 🇰🇪

Drone Sightings Force Copenhagen and Oslo Airports to Close Temporarily

It was not clear who was behind the episode, but Denmark’s prime minister called it the “most serious attack so far” on the country’s infrastructure.

Drone sightings forced the authorities in Denmark and Norway to close the main airports in Copenhagen and Oslo for several hours overnight, causing widespread flight disruptions that were expected to last into Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear where the drones originated, who was operating them, and whether the Oslo and Copenhagen sightings were linked. But Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark said in a statement that it was the “most serious attack so far” on the country’s critical infrastructure and that her government was not ruling out any possibilities about who was responsible.

Several European countries, especially those near Ukraine, are in a state of high alert for incursions after Russian aircraft entered the airspace of Poland, Estonia and Romania in recent weeks.

Ms. Frederiksen said the police in Copenhagen said the episode involved a “capable actor,” adding that it was “clear that this ties into the developments we have observed recently with other drone attacks, violations of airspace, and cyberattacks on European airports.”

Cache of Devices Capable of Crashing Cell Network Is Found Near U.N.

The Secret Service discovered more than 100,000 SIM cards and 300 servers, which could disable cellular towers or be used to conduct surveillance.

The Secret Service found and seized an illicit network of sophisticated equipment in the New York region that was capable of shutting down the cellular network as foreign leaders prepared to gather nearby for the annual U.N. General Assembly, the agency announced on Tuesday.

Officials said the anonymous communications network, which included more than 100,000 SIM cards and 300 servers, could interfere with emergency response services and could be used to conduct encrypted communication. One official said the network was capable of sending 30 million text messages per minute, anonymously. The official said the agency had never before seen such an extensive operation.

There is no specific information that the network, now dismantled, posed a threat to the conference itself, Secret Service officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The agency leads the security for the U.N. meetings this week.

The conference draws more than 100 foreign leaders and their staffs and has been described as the Super Bowl of spy games. The scale of the equipment discovered suggests the network could be part of a nation’s surveillance operation, experts said.
