Britain is a nation where Islamist extremists have been a primary criminal concern
Europe, Muslims and Crime: some detailed views
"(...)
The fact is that in 2016, The Muslim News noted, “The number of Muslim prisoners in British jails has doubled over the past ten years.” In the US, a Muslim group called Muslim Advocates published research establishing “that Muslims are overrepresented in state prisons by a factor of eight relative to the general population. In some state systems, Muslims are overrepresented by a factor of closer to 18, with more than 20% of prisoners identifying as Muslim. The absolute number of Muslim prisoners has also increased over time, even as prison populations in many states have tended to decrease in the last few years.”
(...)
National Audit on Group-Based Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse referred to a 2015 study which recommended “researching the possible reasons for the disproportionate involvement of perpetrators from a Pakistani and/or Muslim ethnic or cultural background in group-based child sexual exploitation.” It stated that “with a significant proportion of those found guilty nationally of group Child Sexual Exploitation being from a Pakistani and/or Muslim heritage, relevant government departments should research why this is the case, in order to guide prevention strategies.”

The fact is a report from the Brookings Institution stated, “Muslims are greatly overrepresented in prisons and within the 18 to 24-year-old age group in particular: they make up only 8.5% of that age cohort in France, yet 39.9% of all prisoners in the cohort.”

In Germany, the fact is that the BBC reported that research commissioned by the government found migrants “may have fueled violent crime rise.” In the Lower Saxony region of Germany, 17% of crimes attributed to migrants were suspected of being committed by North Africans, whose majority religion is Islam, even though this group makes up less than 1% of the state’s migrant population.

The fact is independent analysis and figures from Danmarks Statistik show “there were 5,921 violent crime convictions in 2021, of which 71% (4,193) were committed by people of Danish origin and 29% (1,728) by immigrants and their descendants. In 2021, immigrants and their descendants represented 14% (817,438) and people of Danish origin 86% (5,022,607) of the total population of 5,840,045.
Thus, immigrants and descendants are overrepresented in violent crime convictions, being 14% of the population and constituting 29% of the violent crime convictions. This translates into immigrants and descendants having 2.5 times higher conviction rates than natives.” Furthermore, this analysis also established the fact that persons who had the highest violent crime conviction rates expressed in multiples of the Danish conviction rate were from Kuwait, Tunisia, Lebanon, Somalia and Jordan, and they were seven to nine times greater than the Danish conviction rates.

Barcelona: Europe’s Capital of Crime and Islamism - Foreigners reponsible for 91 % of thefts, 78% of total arrests
Barcelona Reveals How Policies Designed to Engineer a Separate National Agenda Have Instead Produced a Geostrategic Vulnerability
Barcelona stands today as Europe’s clearest warning of what happens when mass illegal immigration, organized crime mafias, and Islamist radicalization converge on a strategically vital Mediterranean city.
As the capital of Catalonia (the second most important region of Spain), Barcelona reveals how policies designed to engineer a separate national agenda have instead produced a geostrategic vulnerability on the European Union’s southern flank.
In 2024, Catalan police recorded 21,808 arrests in Barcelona. Foreign nationals accounted for 17,158 of them, or 78.7 percent. Theft drove the statistics: 5,442 arrests, with foreigners responsible for 4,942, or 91 percent.
Foreign criminal networks, debt-bonded African migrants, and expanding Islamist networks exploit the same autonomy and permissive policies that Catalan leaders once believed would isolate them from Madrid. The result is a city where tourists and residents alike navigate daily threats while broader European security deteriorates.
The numbers on street crime are devastating. In 2024, Catalan police recorded 21,808 arrests in Barcelona. Foreign nationals accounted for 17,158 of them, or 78.7 percent. Theft drove the statistics: 5,442 arrests, with foreigners responsible for 4,942, or 91 percent. In violent robberies, the foreign share reached 83.5 percent. Pickpocketing remains the dominant plague around La Rambla and the Sagrada Familia area. These figures place Barcelona among the worst cities in the European Union for property crime.
This petty crime forms part of a larger ecosystem controlled by transnational mafias. Sub-Saharan migrants reach Spain through the North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, Europe’s only land border with Africa.
Unlike the situation along the southern border of the United States, where many individuals attempt crossings independently, the European route operates as an industrial-scale business run by organized networks. Traffickers extract payment through debt bondage. Once in Catalonia, sub-Saharan men often work as ‘manteros’—selling counterfeit goods on blankets in public spaces—or engage in other illegal activities to repay the smugglers. Failure to pay brings threats against families back in Africa.
More sophisticated syndicates operate above this level. Balkan clans fight turf wars over cocaine routes through Barcelona’s port. Russian and Georgian networks launder money through real estate and hospitality businesses. Romanian groups dominate segments of organized theft. These mafias thrive in the jurisdictional gray zones created by Catalonia’s high degree of political autonomy.
The Islamist challenge runs deeper and carries graver strategic consequences. Catalonia holds Spain’s largest Muslim population, approximately 700,000 people, representing around 10 percent of the regional total and well above the national average. On the other hand, more than 300 mosques and places of worship operate in the region.
Radicalization has concentrated in certain towns. In 2017, an Islamic State-inspired cell from Ripoll executed the deadliest attack in Spain since 2004, driving a van through crowds on La Rambla (Barcelona) and carrying out a second assault in Cambrils. The attacks killed 16 people and injured more than 140. The cell drew on locally radicalized youths of Moroccan origin.

About 16% of the total population of foreigners accounted for 34% of suspects in crimes in Germany
The closest thing to an official figure is the number of French inmates who registered for Ramadan – 18,300 out of a total prison population of 67,700, or 27%, back in 2013 according to Agence France Presse.A Brookings Institution report says that “Muslims are greatly overrepresented in prisons and within the eighteen- to twenty-four–year-old age group in particular: they make up only 8.5 percent of that age population in France, yet 39.9 percent of all prisoners in the cohort.”
This, obviously, is not to suggest that France doesn’t have a serious problem with integrating Muslim men (in England and Wales, 15% of the prison population is Muslim from a total population of 5%). This is pertinent to Muslims since 46 per cent of them live in the 10% most deprived local authority districts in Britain today.
Labour MP David Lammy last week revealed the results of an independent review into the treatment of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals in the criminal justice system. One of the most shocking findings was that Muslims account for 15 per cent of Britain’s prisoners – a 50 per cent increase since ten years ago – despite being under 5 per cent of its population.
The proportion of foreign-born inmates in German prisons is now at a record high, according to a new survey of the justice ministries in Germany's 16 federal states. In Berlin and Hamburg, for example, more than 50% of inmates are now from abroad, according to the report, which also revealed a spike in the number of Islamists in the German prison system.
The data, compiled by the newspaper Rheinische Post, shows that the surge of foreign-born inmates began in 2015, when Chancellor Angela Merkel allowed into Germany more than a million mostly unvetted migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Ahead of the presentation of the 2025 figures for crime in Germany by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), Susann Prätor has shared her thoughts on the issue of nationality and statistics. She is a sociologist, psychologist and legal scholar. Her work as an expert on crime draws on these diverse perspectives.
More than a third of all suspects are not German citizens. About 16% of the total population of Germany don't have German citizenship, yet they accounted for roughly 34% of suspects in crimes as diverse as theft, burglary and violent crimes. In 2024, there was a 7.5% increase in violent crime involving suspects with non-German nationality. But experts point out that this may be due to a rise in reporting rather than actual incidents.
