Between 2014 and 2024, sexual violence offenses jumped by 94% in Europe
Recent European crime data reveals a concerning rise in violent and sexual offenses alongside a decrease in property-related crimes. While Europe remains the second-safest continent globally (after Oceania), changing demographic and political factors are shifting local crime dynamics and organized crime markets.
Sexual Violence: The number of police-recorded sexual violence offenses (including rape) in the EU has risen significantly. Between 2014 and 2024, sexual violence offenses jumped by 94%, with a continuous year-over-year increase of roughly 10%.
Homicides: There were 3,953 intentional homicides recorded in the EU. This represented a slight 1.4% increase, with absolute numbers going up most notably in Germany and Finland.
Neighbourhood Safety: Roughly 10% of the EU population reports experiencing crime, violence, or vandalism in their local neighbourhoods. Those at risk of poverty (12.3%) are disproportionately impacted compared to those who are not (9.6%).
Migrant Background Statistics: In specific regions, demographic changes are heavily reflected in local suspect records. For instance, data indicates higher absolute numbers and rates of violent crime suspects being reported among certain non-German national groups in Germany.
"Covering one's hair here so as not to offend believers": in Rosny-sous-Bois, the female mayor wears a veil at the mosque
The images of the socialist mayor of Rosny-sous-Bois wearing an Islamic veil in the city's grand mosque, during her address to the faithful, are sparking reactions. They raise questions as the respect for secularism (laïcité) appears to be compromised.
"We would like to thank Madame Mayor, this is a first in Rosny, it is the first time the mayor is a woman, it is an honor for all women! It is a mission that awaits her, a mandate that requires a lot of responsibility, a lot of effort (...)"
