In 2020 Portugal had a total of 666,374 foreign residents. The number of foreign citizen residents rose to 782,000 in 2022, representing an 11.9% increase from 2021, suggesting a figure around 700,000 foreign residents in 2021. In 2022 the number of foreign citizen residents reached an unprecedented 782,000, representing 7.5% of the total resident population. In 2023 the number of foreign citizens with a Residence Permit surpassed 1 million, reaching 1,044,606.
This was a 33.6% increase from 2022. In 2024 government data indicate that the number of foreign residents could reach 1.5 million to 1.6 million once all data from residency requests is analyzed. This represents around 15% of the country's total population, with a large percentage from India, Bangladesh and Nepal. For a total of 1.6 million immigrants, with a rate of 20 immigrants sharing a home, it would be necessary to have 80,000 homes. With an average number of 10 immigrants for a home, ir would be necessary to have 160 thousand homes.
House prices have more than doubled in the last ten years, while average incomes have only grown by about 33%. This creates a huge affordability gap for many Portuguese families, especially the middle class and young people. More than half of Portuguese workers earn less than €1000 per month.
Eurostat data from 2021 reported that 56.4% of young Portuguese people aged 25 to 34 lived at home with their parents.
